Actress Jaya Bachchan gave Zero Hour notice in Rajya Sabha in Parliament to criticise those who have attacked Bollywood, stating that there is an “alleged conspiracy to defame the film industry”.

She slammed BJP MP and Bollywood actor Ravi Kishan for his comments.

Jaya claimed that people who achieved fame through Bollywood have called the industry a “gutter”.

She said: “People in the entertainment industry are being flogged by social media.

“People who made their names in the industry have called it a gutter. I completely disagree.

“I really dissociate myself from them and I hope that the government tells these people who have earned their name and fame through the industry to stop using such language.”

She went on to say that by turning against Bollywood, such celebrities have bitten the hand that fed it.

Jaya is an MP for the Samajwadi Party. MPs can raise issues of critical importance in the Zero Hour subject to approval by the Speaker.

On September 14, 2020, Ravi said that the drug issue has affected Bollywood. He asked the government to take action against those involved in drug trafficking.

He claimed that drugs are imported from China and Pakistan and there is a conspiracy to destroy India’s youth.

Ravi had said: “Drug addiction is in the film industry too. Several people have been apprehended. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been doing very good work.

“I urge the central government to take strict action against the culprits soon.

“Give them a befitting punishment and bring an end to this conspiracy by neighbouring countries (China and Pakistan).”

However, this led to criticism from Jaya Bachchan who also complained that Bollywood was being unfairly criticised.

“I think the government must stand by the entertainment industry as it always comes forward to help the government in whatever effort it makes.

“If there is a national calamity, they give their money and everything. The government must support it and not kill it.”

She also added that “just because there are a few people (doing bad things), you cannot tarnish the image of the entire industry.”

The heated debate came amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. Although his death was initially believed to be suicide, many other links have emerged which suggest he was murdered.

One of those is a drugs link against his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty who currently remains in custody.

The NCB is currently investigating the drugs angle and numerous suspects have been arrested, including Rhea, her brother Showik Chakraborty and Sushant’s house manager.

It has been reported that a number of Bollywood celebrities have been named by the suspects.
